Effective Ways to Clear Up Blocked Drains
Blockages can happen when you least expect, so you should be prepared to deal with one when emergency calls. If a blockage is left unattended, it can cause water to leak from the drain, damaging your business facility or home.
Severe blockages can lead to burst pipes, which require costly repairs. Here are a few options you should consider if you're to get rid of blocked drains.
Hot Water and Dish Soap
This is an effective, natural way to unclog your slow drain, especially if grease is the cause of your clog. For a better outcome, squirt soap down your clogged drain and then pour a kettle full of boiling water down it. To prevent the clogs from re-occurring, do this once every week.
Drain Snake
Handheld drain snakes feature a long spring wire which you can 'snake' into the drain. Once it's up against a clog, twist it to catch and remove debris. If everything fails, remove the clog and drain pipe manually.
Clogs commonly occur around the piece known as the P-trap. This piece comes fitted with nuts on both ends, which are easy to twist off. If it's made of metal pipes, use a large adjustable wrench or channel lock.
Don't forget to place a bucket under the piece before removing it.
Dry and Wet Vacuum
To get the best results with the dry and wet vacuum, set it to vacuum liquids and then cover up the vent to prevent any mess. Ensure that you create a tight seal over the drain. You can even get creative and consider an old plunger head for this task.
When the vacuum is turned to the highest setting, it can be powerful enough to draw the clog into the vacuum bag. Take note that it may not always work, but it is something you may want to consider.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Mix a tablespoon of baking soda with a cup of hydrogen peroxide. Pour the mixture on the drain then let it foam. This should be enough to unclog and clear your drain. When using these products, ensure that you follow safety precautions.
For instance, your hands should be protected with rubber gloves. When boiling water, use potholders or oven mitts so that you don't burn your hands. When pouring water down the drain, keep your face back to avoid steam burns.
